When someone mentions the word 'dietitian', what is the first thought that comes to your mind? The most common response would be: "Someone who puts you on a diet to help you lose weight." Many people are not fully using our services as a result of this false perception.

A dietician is a member of a medical and wellnes team and has a unique role to play. Dietitians are health professionals who empower people to make better food choices in their day to day life as well as those with specific medical conditions. They are not Nay Sayers and evil doers when it comes to all matters tasteful on the palate. Rather, dietitians fully comprehend the social aspects related to eating and we are in agreement that eating is supposed to be a pleasurable experience! Healthy eating is central to the wellbeing of people and as mentioned above, the food choices you make today is key to the quality of life you will lead tomorrow. With what type of work can a dietitian be involved?
Dietitians can run health days, consult in private practise, work in hospitals with critically ill patients, work in food service management and work in corporate environments.

What type of patients can be seen by a dietitian?
The scope of practice of a dietician covers clinical medicine, healthy individuals who need nutritional advice at any stage of their lifecycle, weight management, management of chronic diseases of lifestyle (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol), organ disorders and gut complications. Dietitians also play an integral part in paediatric nutrition, nutrition during/post pregnancy, breastfeeding and sports nutrition.

What makes dietetics a valuable profession?
Dietitians play a key role in assisting patients to achieve optimal health and prevent and manage diseases. Dietetics is a profession whereby all the information given is based on research and scientific evidence-based knowledge. In today's world, it becomes difficult to sort through all the nutrition misinformation and thus it is important to have a dietitian to provide you with the correct advice tailored to your individual needs.
